Family Vacations
Accommodations
There are 19 redwood cabins on the oak and fir clad hills, most built by Al Byrnes between 1910 and 1925. Each cabin is furnished with beds (along with bed and bath linens), ceiling fans, cold spring water and electricity.
A hammock is generally found adjacent or nearby.
Bathrooms and shower facilities are located in the camp area. Capacity is about 70 people, but we prefer to keep it around 60 to 65. We serve three meals most days (breakfast on Saturday, dinner on Sunday), family style. There is no bar.
Program Activities
Believing that families truly need time to be together in an unstructured, pressure-free environment, we provide limited to no programmed activities. This allows you and your family to create your own adventures without feeling the stress of an overly burdensome schedule.
You have the choice to be as active or inactive as you like!
The Eel River borders the ranch for three miles, offering all types of natural swimming holes, driftwood gathering, rock hunting, and/or sand-castle building. There are numerous hiking trails throughout our 1,000 acres of wooded hill-land.
Perhaps you and your kids would like to gain some hands-on experience as farmers. We always welcome help with farm chores. Throughout your stay you'll have the option to try your hand at berry picking, egg gathering, cow milking, tending our organic garden, harvesting vegetables for our kitchen, making snacks, or a variety of other daily tasks.
At night, the sky offers a brilliant display of summer constellations. The campfire circle has held people captive for hours, with songs, stories, skits and games.
And if you're just in the mood to rest and relax, feel free to sit in your hammock or throw a blanket on one of our lawns and curl up with a good book from our library.
Whatever you choose, it's your time to do as you wish.
Meals
We serve 3 farm-comfort food, family-style meals a day. Everything is made "from scratch," no mixes are used. A good portion of the vegetables and fruits we use comes from the farm. Barring extenuating circumstances, lots of our eggs come from our own chickens. We raise grass-fed beef, and our own free-range pigs and chickens. Otherwise we endeavor to support local, sustainable, organic farmers. We house-roast our own fair-trade coffees, produce our own jams and syrups... our bread and granola are made here almost daily, sometimes baked in our outdoor brick oven. If you have strict dietary restrictions/allergies, a kitchen is available for your use.
Week-long Session Meals begin with dinner on Sunday night, and end with a later breakfast on Saturday morning
Weekend Session Meals begin with dinner on the first night, and end with a late breakfast on the day of your departure.
