Workshop Title: Let's Write A Song!

Which Session? June 24-28, 2026

Workshop Description: Would you like to write a song? Are you already a songwriter? Like all art, songwriting is both inspiration and craft. In this class, we’ll look at what goes into writing a good song: structure, rhythm, rhyming, melody and chords. We’ll get into the arc of the story, the voice, and more. We’ll talk about using prompts and other ways to find inspiration. We’ll have fun writing a song together, and you’ll have time to work on and share your own songs.

Levels of Experience: Any

Additional Supplies Participants Must Bring to Workshop: Bring a musical instrument if you play one; pen/pencil and paper; and/or laptop.

Where else have you taught this workshop or a similar course?: John has been writing songs and performing music in the greater Bay Area since the 1970s. Kate Wolf recorded his lyrics to the fiddle waltz “Midnight On The Water” back in 1976, and since then John has released seven CDs of his own. You can listen to his music on his website: royzat.com
